A
music school in Bangalore vows to make a difference. Since its inception
in 1987, The Bangalore school of music (B.S.M.) is committed
to educate and train aspiring musicians in western classical tradition.
Mrs. Aruna Sunderlal, the founder-director of the school
says "We are well aware of the fact that people, especially the
younger generation, exposed to TV videos would find it hard to understand
and appreciate classical music, be it Indian or Western. But over
the years, I have seen many people develop a liking towards classical
music from their initial frenzy of hard rock and other forms of
music." From a humble beginning with just three students, the school
now has nearly 230-240 regulars with nearly 18 Faculty members.
The classes are held in all instruments of the orchestra like Piano,
Violin, Viola, Cello, Classical guitar, Recorder, Clarinet, Oboe,
Saxophone and Trumpet, including voice production/singing.
The
school is interested in promoting Indian music to other parts of
the world .The biennial event East - West Music & Dance encounter
organized by the school seems to prove this point. Prominent artists
from all over the world share the stage with the Indian musicians
in this event.
However
there are few dissonant notes too. The school which is the first
of its kind in the city and the third formal music school in India
lacks support. The old villa on the Netaji Road is unable to accommodate
the growing number of students. The music scores often has to be
imported as it is not available in India. "Locally produced instruments
are not of good standards and can hinder the progress of the students.
The government imposes 60% tax on imported instruments. Unless
the Government changes this destructive policy, it's hard for the
students to sustain their interest in music" adds Mrs. Sunderlal.
Taking all these problems in its stride B.S.M. continues in its
endeavor to impart quality musical education to the enthusiasts.
