THE
EAST WEST MUSIC AND DANCE ENCOUNTERS
A Cross-cultural and Academic Meet.
Perhaps the most important achievement - 'The
Jewel in the Crown' of the Music School has been the six
biennial East West Encounters, that have served to expose the music
of the East and the West on a common platform.
Instituted since 1990, under the chairmanship of
Dr. Raja Ramanna, with support from the renowned German Conductor,
Dr. H. Koelreutter and singer Margarita Schack, together
with Indian Scholars as Dr. Raja Ramanna, B.V.K. Shastry,
the late Vainika Doraiswamy Iyenger, and other eminent persons
each encounter has grown in stature and variety.
The first Encounter in 1990, brought together nearly
three hundred musicians and scholars from different cultural and
musical backgrounds. Concerts, seminars and workshops drew music
lovers from all around the country to Bangalore.
The interest generated at the first Encounter encouraged the organizing
committee to continue the musical dialogue between experts of the
East and West and hold the Encounter biennially.
These subsequent Encounters grew as more artistes from many
more countries performed in it. Topics of universal appeal such as
'Rhythms', 'New Music' and 'Future Music' were
discussed and it generated deep and lively discussions among pundits
of music from around the world at the Encounter.
Each Encounter in its turn brought out its own
special moments, which are being discussed even today. Just a few
weeks ago, a leading newspaper ran an article on Pt. Vishwa Mohan
Bhatt and described his encounter with Jie Bing Chen
from China as a 'path breaker'. This happened in the Encounter
of 1996.
Pandit Bhatt also encouraged musicians from
Egypt at the same Encounter. European Jazz Artistes have interacted
with renowned percussionists such as TAS & Ramamani troupe
and others since 1990. Even as Irish piper played Tyagaraja's
kritis with the Carnatic Vidwans. Each learnt something from the
other. The Global Orchestra of 100 Artistes from 8 countries forged
at the 1998 Encounter under Dr. L. Subramanian is still remembered.
The Encounter 2000 this year, a sort of a fusion
between French Jazz and a Trinidadian Steel Band and
a Tabla Trio among other was memorable. The Encounters have
focussed on a variety in the various fields of music and dance.
We live in a cosmopolitan world where each culture has an impact
on its neighbor. Each one has its own value. Respect for each other's
culture and traditions and the sharing of it is the essence of the
East-West Music and Dance Encounter.
Several Indian artistes have been invited overseas
due to the links forged at the Encounters.
